My son (Barney) came home crushed yesterday…
He had failed to make it onto the cross-country team.
I was surprised.
He usually does well on sports day, and at rugby, he’s pretty fast.
…Something about not wanting to get tackled I suspect.
Anyway, we sat down and I asked what had happened.
“The race was long. I didn’t know where the finish was. Miss Dawson (PE teacher) said that I was close to the end but didn’t realise and slowed down.”
Ahhhh, that made sense.
On the track and in rugby you can see the line.
Whereas cross-country is a bit like this game of business…
A winding track, through a muddy forest full. Half the time you have no clue where you are and no idea where the finish is.
And the most frustrating thing for many men in this game?
Just like my son…
You are so close but can’t see it.
Think about it this way – you’ve done the hard bit.
You had the grit and determination to go it alone when most do not.
You’ve put in the hard graft.
And when most businesses fail, you’ve got a business that has survived.
The reality is you’re doing better than most.
…Yet I suspect it doesn’t always feel like that.
(It didn’t for me anyway.)

Desperately trying to clutch at straws and frantically throwing sh%t at the wall to see what might stick to get you to the next level.
And when you are in this place it is easy to miss how close you are.

Accepting that what got you here won’t get you there.
