There is a new gym in town.
It’s modern, dark and with all the fancy kit, apparently.
A mate joined and asked if I wanted to go.
A swift ‘no’ was the response.
For two reasons…
Firstly, these gyms are always full of tools.
‘All the gear and no idea’ types who spend longer looking in the mirror than working out.
I prefer my gyms ‘old school.’
A beat-up industrial unit, sawdust on the floor, and testosterone dripping from the walls.
And the second reason – the contract.
Gyms like this are notorious for contracts that make negotiating Brexit look easy.
Try to leave and you’ll waste weeks of time.
And maybe have to sell a kidney in the process.
Now, these sh*tty contracts are how these fancy gyms, and frankly lots of other businesses, make money.
B-U-T it irks me.
They are the backbone of a bad business.
… Because everyone ends up losing.
It’s why, even though it goes against the grain…
I don’t operate this way.
Inside One Man Empire there is no contract.
Never has been.
Never will be.
Men inside are free to walk away.
At any time, for any reason.
Truth is, sometimes this happens.
And I am out of pocket when it does.
Yet when others push lengthy contracts, tie-ins, and complex T&Cs….
I choose to shoulder that risk and put my neck on the line.
Why am I willing to be so bold?
This works and so the numbers work in my favour,
The vast majority of men stick around.
In fact, many men inside are ‘lifers’ and have been around since the beginning – Matt H, Ian S, Neil M, Tony M, to name a few.
Now, there are fail-safes in place.
Firstly, I personally interview every applicant.
No expectations.
Funny story… a new member, Geoff from Surrey, joined recently.
We were talking and it turns out he wasn’t expecting yours truly on the application call, thinking it would be ‘some lackey.’
Nope, it will be me.
You come and play in my house, I want to know who you are.
Anyway, the second fail safe?
The ‘no contract’ thing works both ways.
D*ckhead behaviour is not tolerated.
Men are kicked out on occasion.
Because in the end, this programme isn’t for everyone.
This is work.
Lazy layabouts need not apply.
