Here’s an instructive conversation I overheard yesterday, while me and Barney were in the line at Starbucks:
“I’m just waiting the next ten years out – then I’ll be sixty-two, able to retire and do what I like…:”
Hmmmmmm…
… Two things to consider about that:
#1 – Ten years – really??!?!
Well, I guess he’s got more patience and more time to wait around than I have.
#2 – Do what you like – at sixty-two?!?!
I don’t think so.
At that age, I’m pretty sure any dreams of tracking the foothills of the Himalayas or doing anything remotely physical or exciting is off the table.
… So here’s what men like you and I would really be wise to take away from this kind of arsehole thinking – especially around what the mass mediocre call “retirement” and what I call giving up:
You are alive NOW, Man!
Experience says that the smartest self made-men among us choose YES to life TODAY and RIGHT NOW.
That my friend is starting to live life in the NOW, not the then.
Plan for the future – YES… BUT fuck, refuse to wait for it.
This life is a bitch, unforgiving and who knows what’s around the corner.
I don’t know about you, but me, I can’t afford to act based on what “could” or “should” happen.
In my experience shit never goes to plan, so better off focusing on what DOES and what IS.
Yes, learn from the past… BUT stop living in it.

Forget waiting for shit to happen…
Forget waiting for luck to strike…
Forget waiting for someone else to do it for you…
Forget waiting till we’re old and weak…
… Because if history has taught men of fortune anything, it’s that it’s ALWAYS best to do what you can while you still can.
